Third Year and Transition Year Students in most second level schools are now looking at what subjects to study for Leaving Cert.

  1. Some schools offer students a completely free choice; others ask students to choose between certain subject groups.
  2. Every student must take Irish, English and Maths,(unless a student has an exemption from Irish). Students will normally choose four other subjects. Most school timetables can only accommodate seven subjects. No matter how many subjects a student takes in the Leaving Cert, CAO will only count the six best.
  3. Students should select subjects as they enjoy as they are more likely to work hard at them and get better results. If a student enjoys a subject in school, this may lead to a similar college course and a possible job or career in that area.
  4. Aptitude tests identify areas of strong interest and a student’s ability in particular subject areas.
  5. Third Level College entry requirements for particular courses should be considered when selecting subjects for Leaving Cert. so that the student does not get locked out of a course.
