Third Year and Transition Year Students in most second level schools are now looking at what subjects to study for Leaving Cert.
- Some schools offer students a completely free choice; others ask students to choose between certain subject groups.
- Every student must take Irish, English and Maths,(unless a student has an exemption from Irish). Students will normally choose four other subjects. Most school timetables can only accommodate seven subjects. No matter how many subjects a student takes in the Leaving Cert, CAO will only count the six best.
- Students should select subjects as they enjoy as they are more likely to work hard at them and get better results. If a student enjoys a subject in school, this may lead to a similar college course and a possible job or career in that area.
- Aptitude tests identify areas of strong interest and a student’s ability in particular subject areas.
- Third Level College entry requirements for particular courses should be considered when selecting subjects for Leaving Cert. so that the student does not get locked out of a course.
